This guide focuses on the 5 "best" apps and websites that we have come to use for tracking the Northern Lights, giving you the pros and cons, and providing you with a few more resources to maximize your aurora hunting experience.

When selecting an app to track the Northern Lights, there are several key features to consider:

Kp Index
The Kp index is a scale from 0 to 9 that measures geomagnetic activity in the Earth's atmosphere. A higher Kp index indicates more significant geomagnetic storms, which increases the likelihood of auroras being visible at lower latitudes. For example, a Kp index of 4 or 5 might be needed to see the aurora in regions like Northern Europe, while a Kp index of 6 or 7 could make them visible further south. Don´t worry too much about the Kp in and around Tromsø where a Kp of even 1 would be enough to see the lights if the weather is playing along.
Bz Component
The Bz component refers to the north-south orientation of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). When the Bz is negative (southward), it allows more solar wind to interact with Earth's magnetic field, increasing the chances of auroras. A strong southward Bz is a good indicator of potential auroral activity and is the data we use the most along with the Bt.
