We are very happy to have both professional hobby photographers and filmmakers making content in the Tromsø area. However, please be aware that the Tromsø island and some of the surrounding areas (The cable car and the Arctic cathedral as examples) are in a regulated area due to proximity to the airport. ALWAYS APPLY TO THE LOCAL AVIATION AUTHORITY AVINOR BEFORE TAKING FLIGHT within the 5 km border surrounding the airport.
Relax, it's quite easy and usually fast for most requests. But be sure to do it, or you may be fined (and usually they will also take your drone and put it on display at the airport. In some occasions guests have been deported after illegal drone flying). Don´t expect to get permission to fly on the Tromsø island unless you have a good reason.
Some areas surrounding the city are also protected nature areas where drone flying is prohibited although they are far from the airport. If birds and wildlife are stressed due to drone flying (following the drone or trying to chase it away) do land as soon as possible. People in general in Norway are also not too happy to have a drone flying over their heads when out in nature - asking permission is always nice.

FOR DRONE FLIGHTS WITHIN 5 KM OF TROMSØ AIRPORT USING UTM:

Download the app for your mobile phone or tablet, or use the web version:
1. Register as a user
2. Make sure you have an "authenticator app", e.g. Microsoft Authenticator – this is due to two-factor authentication
3. Record required data
4. Drone operator is now ready to create a flight plan.
This implies:
1. Desired location for flight
2. Departure time and duration
3. Altitude
4. Other details
The drone operator has now made a request for a flight to air traffic control (LTT). It is important to note that this is not automatically an approval as the flight plan must be assessed against other air traffic in the area. LTT will then evaluate and approve/provide feedback on the flight plan. When the drone operator is ready, a request for permission to fly should be sent.
Secondly, permission to fly will be accepted with confirmation from LTT after consideration of other local conditions.
Once the drone operator has received this message, flying can be started.
