The Sherpa Stairs in Tromsø

One of the most scenic and accessible hikes in Tromsø is the walk to the top of Storsteinen Mountain, a popular spot for both locals and visitors seeking stunning panoramic views of the city, fjords, and surrounding mountains. The journey starts with a pleasant walk to the base of the Sherpa stairs, located near the lower station of the Fjellheisen cable car.

The Sherpa stairs, constructed by skilled craftsmen from Nepal, consist of over 1,200 hand-laid stone steps, winding their way up the steep mountainside. As you ascend, you’ll be surrounded by the beautiful Arctic wilderness, with lush vegetation, occasional streams, and an ever-expanding view of Tromsø and its surroundings.

The steps are well-maintained and provide a steady path upward, making the hike accessible to a range of fitness levels. Although the climb is steep at times, the effort is well rewarded with several viewpoints along the way, where you can pause to catch your breath and take in the breathtaking scenery.

Reaching the summit of Storsteinen at 671 meters above sea level offers a magnificent view of Tromsø, the Tromsøysundet strait, and the distant Kvaløya Mountains. On a clear day, you’ll be able to see far beyond the city, with dramatic landscapes stretching in all directions. It's the perfect spot to relax, enjoy a picnic, or snap photos before beginning the descent - either the same way we came up, or on some of the many paths in the area.

If you prefer not to hike back down, you have the option of taking the Fjellheisen cable car, which offers a relaxing ride back to the city, allowing you to savor the views for a little longer. Whether you're an avid hiker or just looking for a memorable outdoor experience, the walk to Fløya via the Sherpa stairs is an essential Tromsø adventure.
